01Common complaints

Consider alternatives or different strategies when: 1. The organization is small (for example, fewer than 50–100 employees) and does not require complex integrations; the overhead of API Central plus custom development may be disproportionate to needs. 2. Rapid, low-code integrations are required but there is no internal ADP integration expertise; evaluate iPaaS solutions with existing connectors or payroll vendors that provide more out-of-the-box integrations. 3. Fully public and transparent API pricing and developer onboarding are required; API Central pricing visibility is limited in public listings and some Marketplace items require login or sales contact. 4. Integration needs primarily consist of reporting or analytics extracts; many teams find CSV/custom report exports a pragmatic approach despite additional operational work. 5. There are strict vendor lock-in concerns and a preference to minimize reliance on proprietary API scopes and marketplace connector dependencies.

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

No internal developer resources and no willingness to engage partners or consulting services.
Requirement for plug-and-play integrations across many niche systems with minimal configuration.
Requirement for publicly posted API pricing prior to vendor engagement.

Limitations acknowledged or implied by sources

Pricing visibility: API Central and some Marketplace listings require login or direct vendor engagement to view pricing.
Development requirement: even with API Central, organizations typically need to build connectors or engage partners to implement integration logic.
API scope and permissions complexity: projects involving masked or sensitive data require careful scope and permissions management; documentation and project setup can be nontrivial.

Roadmap / future features

No public, dated API Central roadmap with feature commitments was identified in accessible sources during this research.

02Why they buy

Differentiators supported by evidence

Standards-based authentication: OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are documented as available for API Central.
Marketplace ecosystem: ADP maintains a partner marketplace with multiple connectors that can reduce custom development for common targets.
Integration project tooling: API Central includes project and certificate management features that support managed credentialing and project organization.

Areas where competitors may have advantages

Pricing transparency: SMB vendors often publish clear pricing that can simplify procurement for smaller buyers.
Developer experience: community feedback highlights API developer experience challenges for some users; some third-party aggregators and integration platforms position themselves on improved developer experience.

03Field reports

Because ADP Custom Integrations is not always reviewed as a standalone SKU, this section synthesizes feedback from reviews of ADP Workforce Now and community discussions related to API Central and ADP APIs.

Review platforms — positive themes

**TrustRadius (ADP Workforce Now)** - Positive reviewer comments often reference the value of a single vendor providing HR, payroll, benefits, and talent management modules in one product suite. Some reviewers describe the user interface in favorable terms but also note implementation shortcomings and opportunities for improvement. **G2 (ADP Workforce Now)** - Reviews commonly cite comprehensive HR and payroll functionality. Several reviews call out reporting complexity and the effort involved in building custom reports. **Gartner Peer Insights (ADP Workforce Now)** - Gartner hosts product reviews for ADP Workforce Now; access to full comments may require login.

Community/social — negative themes about integrations/APIs

Community forums and technical discussion platforms raise several recurring friction points: - API developer experience: posts describing token handling, pagination, endpoint complexity, and SDK development indicate friction for some developer teams. - Prevalence of file-based workarounds: administrators and sysadmins report preferring custom CSV report exports when API access is limited or costly. - Cost and access concerns: community threads often discuss uncertainty about API access pricing and point to Marketplace connectors or API Central as gated or paid options.

Why customers choose ADP (inferred from reviews/discussions)

Common reasons for selecting ADP include:

Established payroll and compliance capabilities.
Availability of multiple HR/payroll modules from a single vendor.
A marketplace of connectors and partner solutions to extend platform capabilities.

Why some customers leave / churn drivers (inferred)

Frequently reported reasons for switching or evaluating alternatives include:

Challenges during implementation and variability in post-sale support.
Discrepancies between expected and delivered capabilities, which sometimes relate to integration expectations.
Integration friction and integration-related costs that motivate evaluation of other vendors or middleware solutions.

Forrester Total Economic Impact (TEI) of ADP API Central

Forrester’s TEI report models benefits for a composite organization and quantifies time savings, ROI, and payback metrics. This study was commissioned by ADP and uses assumptions derived from vendor‑sponsored interviews. It is useful for identifying potential benefit categories (time savings, reduced manual work, fewer errors) but should not be interpreted as independent proof that all customers will realize the same outcomes.

ADP’s own case-study materials

ADP references customer case studies (for example, APS Materials, Inc.) to illustrate outcomes. The methodology and baseline assumptions for these materials are not independently validated in publicly accessible sources.

04Best fit

Company sizes

Typical fit is mid-market and enterprise organizations (for example, mid-sized to very large employers for Workforce Now contexts; larger organizations for enterprise ADP platforms) where integration automation yields measurable operational benefits.

Industries

Broad applicability including healthcare, manufacturing, professional services, retail, and other sectors where payroll and workforce data integration are required.

Roles/personas

HRIS and payroll operations leaders
IT integration engineers and developers
Security and compliance teams (due to sensitive HR data)
Finance and ERP stakeholders (for payroll journal integrations)

Qualification criteria (good fit)

The organization already uses ADP (Workforce Now, Workforce Now Next Gen, Vantage, or Enterprise HR) and requires repeatable, secure integrations.
There is in-house development capacity or access to trusted systems integrators/partners.
A Marketplace connector exists for primary integration targets, enabling faster implementation.

05The pitch

What the product does (core value proposition)

“ADP Custom Integrations” can be described as ADP’s ecosystem for connecting ADP HCM/payroll data with other business systems using: - **ADP API Central** (a paid, self-service product for API access plus integration project tooling and ticketed support). - **ADP Marketplace connectors** (prebuilt partner integrations that can reduce the need for fully custom development). - **Professional and partner services** (ADP consulting billed at published hourly rates and third-party partners such as Flexspring, Aquera, and DataBlend). ADP positions API Central as a platform to manage integration projects (project setup, certificate management, and team access) and to provide standards-based API access (OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect). ADP’s official materials describe API Central as intended to support building custom integrations and connecting workforce data through secure APIs and supporting tools.

Target market and positioning

- Primarily mid-market and enterprise ADP customers that require workforce data synchronization across HRIS, payroll, benefits, time, ERP/finance, identity, analytics, recruiting, and compliance systems. - Independent software vendors (ISVs) and integration partners developing connectors for ADP customers via the ADP Marketplace. Community discussions indicate that many organizations use file-based exports/custom reports (CSV) as an integration workaround when APIs are perceived as costly, limited, or difficult to use.
