FBX is commonly used, but alternatives are preferable in specific scenarios:
1) Web / real-time distribution-focused pipelines
- glTF/GLB is generally a better fit when compact files, real-time performance, and PBR materials are primary concerns.
2) Large-scale scene composition and multi-application collaboration
- USD/OpenUSD is designed for referencing, layering, and complex production-scale interchange.
3) Security-sensitive ingestion of third-party 3D assets
- FBX has a history of parser-related CVEs in some downstream products. Organizations that routinely ingest untrusted assets should apply stricter sandboxing, scanning, or consider alternative ingestion workflows.
4) Teams without technical art or pipeline capacity
- FBX interchange frequently requires adjustments (naming, baking, axis/unit handling, texture/material reconstruction). Teams lacking pipeline resources may prefer formats and workflows with more predictable, out-of-the-box behavior.
5) Requirement for consistent materials across targets
- If a workflow requires near-identical material appearance across multiple target environments, consider formats and pipelines specifically designed for PBR compatibility (commonly glTF for PBR assets, or USD for broader pipeline scenarios).
