Community discussions express concern about AWS service lifecycles and potential sunsetting. AWS announced deprecation of App Mesh with guidance to migrate toward VPC Lattice (and other AWS-native options), with a defined deprecation window. This guidance increases the likelihood that VPC Lattice will be recommended for certain AWS-native service networking use cases.
| Starting Price | Published usage-based pricing billed on multiple usage metrics (region-dependent) | Published usage-based pricing billed on endpoint and data usage metrics | Open-source software; costs are operational (cluster resources, engineering, optional commercial support) |
| Appropriate Use Cases | Multi-account/multi-VPC AWS microservices needing centralized L7 connectivity, policy, and observability without sidecars | Private connectivity to services across VPCs/accounts (and to AWS/SaaS endpoint services) | Deep service mesh features (traffic policy, mTLS, telemetry) with control and portability |
| Key Strength | Centralized service-network abstraction and IAM-integrated authorization; managed, AWS-native approach | Mature private connectivity pattern; established mental model and ecosystem | Very feature-rich mesh; fine-grained traffic and security controls; portable across environments |
| Key Weakness | Costs can increase with many provisioned services; introduces new constructs and operational patterns | Does not provide a unified L7 routing/policy plane by itself; can result in many endpoints to manage | Operational complexity; sidecar overhead; platform engineering burden for upgrades and maintenance |
