| Starting Price | Varies by region; billed hourly; requires a minimum number of domain controllers; billing can appear as per-domain-controller line items | Hourly per SKU; Microsoft’s pricing documentation uses per-hour SKUs and may require sign-in/contact for region-specific pricing | Published baseline per-region hourly pricing available from the vendor |
| Recommended for | AD-dependent workloads hosted on AWS; hybrid AD into AWS; integration with AWS services (EC2, FSx, WorkSpaces, RDS SQL Server) | AD-dependent workloads hosted on Azure with Entra ID integration | AD-dependent workloads hosted on Google Cloud; regional managed domain deployments |
| Key Strength | Integration with AWS services and managed DC operations in AWS | Native fit for Microsoft-centric organizations; close integration with Entra ecosystem | Published baseline per-region pricing; integration with Google Cloud networking |
| Key Weakness | Administrative constraints versus self-managed AD; cost sensitivity for small/low-use directories; regional constraints | Pricing transparency varies by region/SKU; Azure-specific operational constraints | Smaller ecosystem for Windows workloads compared with AWS/Azure; different operational model |
AWS vs Microsoft Entra Domain Services
AWS vs Google Cloud Managed Microsoft AD
AWS Managed AD vs self-managed AD on EC2
Modern cloud directory platforms (JumpCloud, Okta, Ping) are not direct AD DS replacements for legacy Windows workloads; they offer cloud-native identity and device management capabilities that may cover some use cases but do not provide full AD DS semantics in the same way.
