- Event-driven, integration-heavy workflows
- If the primary need is event-driven automation with many SaaS connectors and complex business workflows, a workflow/iPaaS service (such as Logic Apps or other workflow platforms) may be a better fit than runbook scripting.
- Strict private endpoint-only environments without worker infrastructure
- In environments that disable public access and require private endpoints for all resources, cloud-run jobs cannot access private-endpoint-secured resources; the Hybrid Runbook Worker pattern is required to operate in this scenario.
- Cross-cloud or heterogeneous infrastructure standardization
- If the strategic requirement is a single automation approach across AWS, Azure, and on-prem with standardized content and configuration management, a platform such as Ansible Automation Platform is often more appropriate.
- Incident automation as a primary goal
- If the primary objective is integrated incident remediation and self-service runbook execution embedded in incident-response tooling, purpose-built incident automation products may be more aligned with that use case.
- Azure sandbox runtime limit
- Maximum runtime allowed per runbook in Azure sandboxes: three hours. This limit can require changes to architecture or the use of Hybrid Workers for long-running tasks.
- Private Link limitation (important for security architectures)
- When using Private Link, cloud jobs cannot access Azure resources secured with private endpoints; Hybrid Runbook Worker is the recommended workaround, which introduces additional operational responsibilities for customers.
- Operational complexity at scale (governance)
- Community and third-party tooling indicate that tracking runbook dependencies on credentials and assets can be challenging without supplemental governance tools.
- Change Tracking & Inventory implementation notes
- Change Tracking and Inventory features require specific agents or data collection configurations, and migration from older agent models to newer monitoring agents may be required.
