Avoid DSVM, or treat it only as a short-term solution, when:
1. An organization requires a managed, collaborative ML platform
- Microsoft recommends Azure ML for teams that need an integrated, managed collaborative development environment.
2. Strict security and compliance requirements exist but cloud operations capacity is limited
- Marketplace materials identify maintenance and vulnerability protection as the deploying organization’s responsibility; if these cannot be operationalized, DSVM presents risk.
3. The workload is primarily distributed data engineering or lakehouse-centric
- A single VM image is an inappropriate abstraction for distributed Spark or lakehouse workloads; consider Databricks or equivalent platforms.
4. Guaranteed toolchain freshness is required without internal upgrade management
- If CUDA, PyTorch, or driver alignment must be guaranteed without self-managed upgrades, managed images or platform services are preferable.
5. Budget governance and cost control are weak
- VM-based approaches require operational discipline to avoid runaway costs; managed platforms may provide additional cost management guardrails.
