1) You do not require foundry-certified SPICE accuracy
- For early learning, concept validation, or small mature-node circuits, open-source or desktop SPICE tools may be more cost-effective.
2) You cannot support infrastructure and operational overhead
- Spectre X’s benefits scale with parallel/distributed deployment. Without investment in compute, job scheduling, storage for large waveform databases, and CAD support, the practical benefits may be limited.
3) Your bottleneck is workflow/UI/results management rather than the solver kernel
- If your organization experiences significant delays in results viewing, database handling, or Virtuoso stability, replacing only the solver may not resolve end-to-end productivity issues.
4) Your primary work is RF-harmonic-balance-centric on another standardized RF flow
- RF-specialized tools may be more appropriate depending on foundry kits, methodology, and organizational standards.
5) Budget constraints or licensing model mismatch
- If predictable, transparent pricing and usage-based scaling without complex metering are required, enterprise EDA licensing models may be a poor fit.
