Cadence Protium is an FPGA-based prototyping platform family used to run pre-silicon hardware at substantially higher speeds than RTL simulation or emulation. Its primary uses include:
- Early software/firmware/OS bring-up prior to silicon availability
- System validation with physical interfaces and peripherals
- At-speed/higher-throughput regressions and long-running workloads
- Hardware/software co-verification
Cadence describes Protium as complementary to Cadence Palladium, sharing a common front-end and providing a migration workflow in which teams perform deeper debug on Palladium and then execute higher-speed workloads on Protium once RTL is stable. Vendor materials present a combined emulation-prototyping workflow for teams that use both systems.
Primary offerings referenced publicly include Protium X3, X2, and earlier generations such as X1 and S1. Cadence also sells interface hardware (notably SpeedBridge adapters), daughtercards, and software flows for implementation and debug.
