Cisco Elastic Services Controller (ESC) is a Virtual Network Function Manager (VNFM) designed for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) environments. It focuses on lifecycle management of virtual network functions (VNFs)—onboarding, instantiation, monitoring, healing (recovery), and scaling—using policy/workflow-driven automation and APIs (REST, NETCONF/YANG, and selected ETSI MANO interfaces).
From Cisco’s overview documentation, ESC is described as providing:
- A single point of configuration for provisioning and monitoring of virtualized services
- Agentless monitoring with a built-in monitoring/actions engine (MONA), with options for distributed monitoring (D-MONA)
- Automated scale-in/scale-out and healing behaviors based on monitoring rules and KPI thresholds
- Multi-tenancy and multi-VIM support (OpenStack; also VMware vCenter and AWS are mentioned as supported VIMs)
- Integration options via REST and NETCONF/YANG and partial ETSI MANO support (subset of lifecycle operations)
