Cisco Fog Director is an application lifecycle management (ALM) platform for Cisco IOx "fog" / edge deployments. Its core function is to centrally deploy, start/stop, upgrade, monitor, troubleshoot, and retire IOx-enabled applications running on supported Cisco edge platforms, using either a web UI or REST APIs.
Cisco describes Fog Director as an approach to operate large production deployments of IOx applications with both application-centric and device/network-centric views.
What it is not: Fog Director is not a general-purpose Kubernetes management plane, not a full IoT device management suite for heterogeneous non-Cisco edge devices, and not, by itself, an OT network management platform (Cisco addresses that adjacent layer with IoT Field Network Director).
Evidence (vendor docs): Cisco’s product overview and the IOx Fog Director user guide emphasize centralized lifecycle controls, tagging/search, monitoring, and log access.
