Choose alternatives (or different Google offerings) when:
1) A fully isolated sovereign/government environment is required
- When contracting or customer requirements mandate a dedicated government cloud partition or physically isolated environment, dedicated partitions such as AWS GovCloud or Azure Government—or Google’s dedicated sovereign offerings—may be more appropriate.
2) Required services are out-of-scope
- When a critical service or particular configuration is not supported under the needed control package, Assured Workloads may prevent deployment, and a competitor’s government partition with broader service availability may be more practical.
3) Cost sensitivity or early-stage constraints
- When premium packages impose a material percentage uplift on spend, smaller or early-stage organizations may prefer to use standard regions with strict policy-as-code controls or use compliance automation tooling for evidence and control management (recognizing these tools do not substitute for sovereign controls).
4) Reliance on Preview features for compliance
- When compliance depends on Preview-labeled capabilities, those Preview statuses can conflict with production and contractual requirements. Such situations typically require alternative approaches.
5) High developer agility requirements across the entire estate
- When guardrails would introduce significant friction for rapid-development teams and the regulated scope is narrow, isolating only regulated components or selecting a different provider’s government environment with a known service catalog may reduce internal friction.
1) Service scope limitations by control package
- Not all GCP products are supported under each compliance package; the supported-service list evolves over time.
2) Migration constraints for existing projects
- Applying Assured Workloads to existing projects may require analysis and remediation rather than a simple toggle; moving projects often needs preparatory work.
3) Preview offerings risk
- Preview-designated components may not meet production or contractual requirements for regulated workloads.
4) Pricing opacity and sales dependency
- Some pricing and support elements are handled through sales and premium support channels, which can complicate evaluation and procurement timelines.
