1) Greenfield applications with no HBase constraints
If an organization does not already benefit from HBase/Phoenix compatibility, simpler managed offerings (MongoDB Atlas, DynamoDB, Cloud Bigtable, managed Cassandra) can reduce operational complexity.
2) Small teams or startups without specialized expertise
Review feedback and ecosystem experience indicate that implementation and tuning can require specialized skills; smaller teams may have difficulty achieving stable performance quickly.
3) Primarily relational OLTP workloads
COD is not positioned as a general-purpose relational database. For classic relational transactions and complex SQL workloads, consider managed relational databases (Aurora/Postgres/MySQL, Cloud SQL, Azure SQL) or distributed SQL systems.
4) Budget constraints / need for predictable billing
Consumption pricing plus infrastructure and networking costs can complicate forecasting. If highly predictable costs are a priority, alternative pricing models may be easier to manage.
5) Search as primary system of record
COD includes Solr integration, but if search relevance and feature richness are the primary system requirements, dedicated search platforms (Elastic/OpenSearch) may be more appropriate as the primary search tier.
