Cloudflare is a critical dependency for many internet properties. Incidents outside of DNS resolution can still affect customers using Cloudflare’s broader platform; historical incidents illustrate that platform dependencies should be considered in risk assessments. Recent incidents have impacted certain Cloudflare services while leaving DNS resolution operational, underscoring that different Cloudflare product components have distinct failure modes.
Aggregated reviews indicate that many users find Cloudflare’s DNS management to be user-friendly, and users commonly report rapid propagation behavior. Review platforms also note mixed feedback on support and pricing transparency: paid plans are frequently characterized as offering better support, while free-tier support is often described as limited.

Download full report →Requirement for multi-provider authoritative DNS without accepting provider-exclusive delegation If continuity strategy requires parallel authoritative DNS providers at the delegation layer, Cloudflare’s standard onboarding flows and activation constraints should be validated; alternative DNS vendors or specialist multi-provider approaches may be more appropriate.
Need for partial edge features without full DNS delegation where Business pricing is not acceptable Organizations that require only specific Cloudflare edge features via CNAME/partial setups but cannot justify Business-tier costs should consider retaining DNS with a separate provider and integrating other security or edge services independently.
Primary decision factor is advanced DNS routing policy features If the primary selection criterion is advanced DNS routing and health-check integrations, a provider with feature-rich routing policies (for example Route 53 in AWS-centric environments) may be a better fit.
Requirement for high-touch, guaranteed rapid support at base tiers If rapid human response is required without Business/Enterprise plan investment, evaluate providers that include stronger base-tier support in their standard offerings.
Cloudflare published a vendor case study describing use of Cloudflare DNS and related features to mitigate attacks at the edge and to provide rapid global DNS responses.
Critical evaluation:
Cloudflare DNS is an authoritative DNS service (and also offers Secondary DNS) that hosts and serves DNS zones for domains using Cloudflare nameservers. The service emphasizes low-latency resolution, resilience through anycast routing across a global network, and includes security controls such as DNSSEC support and DDoS mitigation.
Important scope clarification: Cloudflare also operates 1.1.1.1, a public recursive resolver used by end users and enterprises for outbound DNS resolution; that facility is a different DNS product category than authoritative DNS. Cloudflare’s marketing and some third-party articles sometimes conflate these two product categories.
