- If only basic Kafka functionality is needed and existing SRE/platform staff can manage OSS Kafka, an OSS deployment (possibly with Strimzi) may be more cost-effective.
- If the organization is fully on AWS and does not require on-premises deployment, Amazon MSK may provide sufficient capability with simpler cloud procurement and transparent pricing.
- If the primary driver is cost reduction and operational simplicity, evaluate alternatives such as Redpanda, which is often positioned (by users and competitors) as having lower operational overhead and potentially lower TCO in certain cases.
- If the use case is small or at an early stage, Confluent Private Cloud may provide more capability than required; managed entry tiers (for example, Aiven) or smaller Kafka-compatible solutions may be a better fit.
- If licensing restrictions for Confluent components are unacceptable (for example, constraints on redistribution), evaluate alternatives with more permissive licensing.
