01Common complaints

1) Organizations that require classic OLTP / ACID multi-statement transactions - CrateDB does not provide transaction control; statements commit immediately. 2) Architectures that depend on Postgres features not implemented by CrateDB - Stored procedures, triggers, and sequences are not supported. 3) When the largest ecosystem and a highly established default tooling stack are required - Teams that prioritize broad community resources may prefer Postgres + Timescale (for time-series) or ClickHouse (for OLAP) depending on workload. 4) When sensitivity to Kubernetes self-managed complexity is high - Some reviewers and community posts cite documentation gaps for custom Kubernetes/Helm configurations; organizations without available operational expertise should plan accordingly. 5) When high availability is mandatory but selection is limited to the lowest tiers - Shared plans are single-node and do not provide replication/HA; higher-tier dedicated plans or self-managed HA configurations are required for production-level availability.

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

Requirement for full OLTP transaction semantics (multi-statement transactions, stored procedures, triggers)
Need for deep Postgres extension compatibility
Requirement for a very large third-party integration ecosystem and extensive community tutorials

Documented limitations (vendor documentation)

No transaction control (auto-commit)
Unsupported features: stored procedures, triggers, sequences
SQL dialect contains differences relative to Postgres; the vendor provides compatibility documentation

Upgrade/migration caveats

Major-version upgrades can require table recreation for older table formats in some cases; planning is necessary to reduce migration friction.

Cloud plan limitations (important)

Shared plans are single-node and do not offer replication/HA; daily snapshots are provided. These plans are appropriate for development or non-critical workloads but not for production HA requirements.

Community-reported operational constraints

JVM heap sizing considerations and guidance are discussed in community threads (for example, compressed-oops heap practicalities); some operational patterns indicate that a larger number of smaller nodes may perform better than very large single nodes in distributed designs.

02Why they buy

Observations supported by reviews and external materials

SQL-based access (PostgreSQL wire-protocol compatibility) is often cited as a usability advantage.
Alignment with operational analytics and industrial IoT scenarios is a recurring theme in product positioning and press materials.

Potential differentiation

Multi-model SQL capabilities (time-series, objects/JSON, geo/text, and search-like features) are positioned to reduce the number of separate systems in an ingestion-to-analysis pipeline.

Areas where competitors are stronger

ClickHouse: frequently considered stronger for OLAP performance at large scale.
Timescale: stronger Postgres compatibility and time-series specialization.
Elasticsearch/OpenSearch: more mature search ecosystems and DSLs for search workflows.

03Field reports

Review platforms (G2, Capterra, Gartner Peer Insights)

G2 (CrateDB): - Well rated on G2. Auto-summarized pros and cons cite ease of use and SQL compatibility on the positive side, and feature limitations, documentation gaps, and configuration complexity on the negative side. Example quotes from reviews (paraphrased for context): - Positive: reviewers report relatively straightforward setup and favorable SQL compatibility and performance in some deployments. - Negative: reviewers report complex configuration in areas such as sharding and Kubernetes, and documentation gaps for custom Kubernetes configurations and Helm charts. Capterra: listing showed limited reviewer activity, reducing its usefulness for sentiment analysis. Gartner Peer Insights: a small reviewer sample was visible with a relatively high average rating; the sample size is limited and should be interpreted cautiously.

Community/social discussions (developer community + forums)

Community forum posts include licensing-related questions and operational guidance (for example, JVM heap observations and node-sizing discussion). Community content and discussions can be useful for operational hints but should not substitute for formal documentation or vendor statements when making procurement decisions.

Selection drivers (themes cited by customers and reviewers)

Common selection drivers observed in public materials and reviews include:

Familiar SQL interface (PostgreSQL wire protocol compatibility)
Horizontal scalability and distributed query execution
Ability to query semi-structured data using SQL
Real-time ingestion and analytics for IoT / machine data

Factors for non-adoption or churn (themes)

Common reasons cited for not choosing or discontinuing use include:

SQL feature gaps compared with Postgres (e.g., no transactional control, no triggers/stored procedures/sequences)
Complexity or documentation gaps in Kubernetes/self-managed configurations
Smaller ecosystem relative to more ubiquitous systems, leading to fewer third-party resources

Vendor-reported scale metrics (examples)

Vendor marketing materials cite high ingest and lookup performance and large-scale outcomes as examples of platform scale. The published excerpts do not include test methodology details (dataset shape, query patterns, hardware sizing, concurrency, or cost). Treat these as directional performance claims rather than guarantees for other environments.

Discrete manufacturing / IoT data platform (press release)

Vendor case materials describe IoT data platform deployments across multiple factories in the US and Europe according to press statements.

Critical evaluation: these materials are vendor-published and lack independent verification of deployment counts and outcomes in the excerpts.
