01Common complaints

Do not choose Elance because it is not an active platform. Do not choose an Elance/Upwork-style open marketplace approach when: - Highly vetted candidates with minimal screening overhead are required (consider Toptal or specialized agencies) - Strict compliance documentation is required (SOC 2/ISO evidence, detailed security addenda) and cannot be obtained from the vendor - Workflows are highly sensitive to fraud risk and dispute costs - Budgets cannot absorb marketplace fees or conversion constraints

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

Regulated industries requiring documented compliance and data residency guarantees (unless enterprise security/compliance can be contractually validated)
Teams with low tolerance for screening overhead or fraud risk

Vendor-acknowledged limitations (legacy)

Elance as a standalone platform is discontinued; no current roadmap.

User-reported limitations (marketplace model)

Account closure finality (per older Elance-era thread)
Difficulty contacting support (multiple Upwork-era threads)
Fake profiles / AI-generated low-quality proposals (client complaint)

Why some users left / churn reasons (from community narratives)

Common themes:

Account closures and perceived lack of appeal process
Fraud / identity issues
Quality dilution and spam/low-effort proposals
Support barriers (limited access to human support; ticketing friction)

02Why they buy

Historically (Elance)

Historical significance as an early entrant in online freelance marketplaces.

In practice today (successor ecosystem)

Upwork offers marketplace scale and platform tooling, and provides enterprise features such as SAML SSO for certain tiers.

Balanced view: the same scale that can provide access to a large talent pool can also increase screening costs and exposure to low-quality activity.

Why customers chose Elance/Upwork-style marketplaces

Based on merger communications and typical marketplace dynamics:

Access to a broad supply of freelancers across many skills
Platform-managed invoicing and payments
Faster hiring than traditional staffing in many cases

03Field reports

Because Elance is a legacy brand, most “reviews” today appear in:

historical community threads
complaint sites
Upwork (successor) community experiences referencing Elance-era interactions

Community/social quotes (anonymized)

**Negative (account closures / platform control):** - A community post described receiving a shutdown notice stating the account had been closed and could not be re-opened. **Negative (migration/history not transferring / support friction):** - A community contributor reported that promised transfer of historical job data did not occur after the migration to the successor platform. **Negative (client-side experience: fraud / fake identity):** - A client recounted hiring and paying milestones, then having the freelancer removed for identity concerns and feeling the dispute process offered inadequate protection. **Negative (quality degradation / fake profiles / AI proposals):** - Long-term users report increased volume of suspected fake or automated proposals compared to earlier platform days.

Complaint/third-party “review” sites

ComplaintsBoard:

Posts allege low-quality providers, multiple accounts, poor support responsiveness, escrow shortcomings, and broad contractual recourse for the platform.

Caution: Complaint sites are biased toward negative experiences and may contain unverified claims; they still provide useful narratives about possible failure modes.

Vendor/press claims (historical)

Merger communications described the combined marketplace as operating at large scale with substantial billings and indicated planned technology investment and improved matching.

Critical evaluation:

These are vendor/press-release claims; methodology and independent audit of “quality improvements” are not provided.

Real-world “case outcomes” in available sources

Most accessible case evidence in this research is anecdotal rather than formal case studies:

Some long-term clients report significant cumulative spend over many years but also note worsening candidate quality and fraud concerns over time.

Gap: No credible, detailed, independently validated ROI case studies for Elance specifically were found in the sources reviewed.

04Best fit

Given Elance’s legacy status, the realistic ICP relates to Upwork-like marketplaces:

Company sizes

SMB to mid-market, roughly 1–1,000 employees, where flexible hiring is needed and procurement can tolerate marketplace risk.

Industries

Tech/startups, digital agencies, e-commerce, content marketing—areas where remote work deliverables are common.

Roles/personas

Hiring managers needing flexible capacity
Founders/ops leads hiring quickly
Procurement (for enterprise programs)

Qualification criteria (good fit)

Clear, spec-driven work (design, dev tasks, content, analytics)
Capacity to screen candidates rigorously
Willingness to pay platform fees for speed and payment tooling

05The pitch

What the product does (core value proposition)

Elance was an online freelance marketplace connecting businesses with independent professionals for project-based and hourly work. The platform provided job posting, proposal/bidding, messaging, milestone management, and escrow/payment handling. **Important context (product status):** Elance as a standalone product is defunct. After a merger with a direct peer, the combined company rebranded as Upwork and Elance-era functionality and users were migrated to the successor platform.

Target market and positioning

Historically, Elance targeted:

SMBs/startups needing flexible, remote talent
Freelancers across a broad set of skills (software, design, writing, admin)

Positioning was as a two-sided marketplace: facilitating global talent sourcing with platform-mediated payments and dispute processes.
