GitHub Issues is GitHub’s built-in issue tracking system for software work management. It enables teams to:
- Capture and triage bugs, feature requests, and tasks as “issues” within repositories.
- Coordinate work using assignees, labels, milestones, templates/forms, task lists, and cross-references to commits/PRs.
- Decompose work with nested sub-issues and visualize progress within GitHub Projects (tables/boards/roadmaps).
In practice, GitHub Issues is used both as:
1) a lightweight backlog/ticketing layer tightly integrated with code, and
2) an open-source community interface for contributor conversations and triage.
