01Common complaints

- Small teams or early-stage startups needing basic shared files - Native managed file services (e.g., Google Cloud Filestore) or an application redesign that uses object storage may be more cost-effective and operationally simpler. - When ONTAP-style features are not required - Paying for enterprise snapshot/clone/replication capabilities can be unnecessary overhead if those features are not used. - Architectures requiring multi-VPC attachment of the same storage - The PSA/VPC accessibility model does not support attaching a single volume/pool to multiple VPCs; alternative designs or services should be considered. - Extremely cost-sensitive, low-utilization, or highly spiky workloads - Provisioned pool models can be less efficient than pay-per-use alternatives in these scenarios. - Situations requiring deep third-party tooling access to underlying storage internals - Verify backup/DR tooling compatibility when deduplication/compression and other storage-efficiency features are in use. - Documented/architectural constraints - PSA networking model and the constraint that a single volume/pool cannot be attached to multiple VPCs. - Quotas/limits exist (for example, an inode allocation model that can affect small-file-heavy workloads). - Roadmap / features not yet available - Some features may be region- or allowlist-dependent; GA status should be confirmed per region and feature. - Scale limitations - Maximum throughput and achievable performance depend on service level and the provisioned capacity model; workload validation is recommended for high-throughput requirements. - Security/compliance gaps - SOC 2 Type II coverage is referenced by Google Cloud for this service, but customers should validate any additional certification or regulatory attestations required for their environment.

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

Requirement limited to a basic NFS share without enterprise data management features
Architectural requirement for a single volume to be attached to multiple VPCs
Extremely cost-sensitive workloads with low utilization where provisioned pool billing is not appropriate

02Why they buy

- Observed in public materials - A managed enterprise file storage service on Google Cloud using ONTAP-derived capabilities, available through Google Cloud console/API. - Multiple service levels providing defined performance models and a Flex option for custom performance tuning. - Support for cross-region replication based on ONTAP replication concepts. - Support for customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) via Cloud KMS and integration with organization policies. - Competitor advantages to consider - Native file services (Filestore/EFS/Azure Files) can offer simpler operational models and may be more widely adopted for basic file-sharing use cases. - Larger independent review footprints exist for hyperscaler-native services, which can provide more community feedback when evaluating risk.

03Field reports

Review platform availability note

Gartner Peer Insights lists the product under a related name (NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud). G2 and TrustRadius include pages relevant to the NetApp cloud offering; review volume for the managed NetApp Volumes offering on Google Cloud appears limited relative to larger hyperscaler-native services.

Positive themes (what users report)

- Managed service convenience - A reviewer on G2 described the service as easy to use and convenient to integrate with major cloud providers. - Familiar enterprise features for NetApp customers - Product materials and user feedback identify snapshots, clones, and replication as features valued by organizations migrating NetApp workloads to the cloud. - Performance for certain workloads - Documentation and some user reports indicate that throughput and IOPS scale with provisioned pool capacity and service level.

Negative themes / complaints (from accessible community sources)

- Product-line and licensing confusion - Community discussions highlight confusion between Cloud Volumes ONTAP (self-managed), Cloud Volumes Service, and hyperscaler-managed offerings, which can complicate decision-making. - Tooling and backup access constraints - Some community posts indicate limitations when third-party backup tooling requires direct access to underlying storage structures, particularly when storage-efficiency features like deduplication or compression are in use. - Pricing sensitivity compared to simpler file services - Comparisons with Filestore and other native offerings show that provisioned-capacity billing models can be less cost-efficient for low-utilization or highly variable workloads.

Reasons cited for choosing the product over alternatives

Requirement for ONTAP-like data management (snapshots, clones, replication) in a managed form factor.
Multiprotocol support (NFS + SMB, plus iSCSI capabilities) relative to NFS-only services.
Migration path for environments with significant NetApp investments, enabling fewer application changes.

Reasons for switching away (where available)

Direct evidence of churn specific to this product is limited in public sources. Likely drivers identified in community discussions include:
- Confusion across NetApp cloud product lines and licensing differences.
- Cost optimization leading teams to choose simpler or more cost-effective native file services when advanced features are not required.

Case Studies

- Vendor/partner case study references (examples) - Google Cloud partnership materials reference customer case studies and examples of organizations adopting NetApp-based cloud storage on Google Cloud. - Vendor blog posts include customer quotes describing reasons for choosing the service, such as integrated management and target performance characteristics. - Quantified outcomes - Marketing materials sometimes present quantified outcomes (e.g., reduction claims) without disclosing methodology; such claims should be validated against an organization’s specific baseline. - Implementation details and time to value - Vendor materials highlight console-based provisioning; actual time-to-value depends on network/security reviews, migration tooling, cutover planning, and application testing. - Challenges faced during adoption - Independent write-ups and analyst commentary note that comparing service levels and aligning them to workload needs can be complex; case studies often under-report implementation friction.

04Best fit

Company sizes

Typically mid-market to enterprise:
- Organizations ranging from mid-market to very large (from hundreds to many thousands of employees)
- Commonly organizations with mid-market to very large annual revenues
Also relevant for smaller organizations with a single mission-critical workload (e.g., SAP) where shared storage reliability/performance justifies the spend.

Industries/verticals

Manufacturing, media/VFX, financial services, SaaS platforms with stateful workloads, healthcare/life sciences (subject to compliance validation)
SAP-heavy organizations requiring predictable latency and throughput for shared file systems.

Roles and personas

Decision makers
- Cloud infrastructure leaders, enterprise architects, storage/platform engineering
- Procurement/FinOps for cost governance
End users
- SRE/platform teams, Windows/Linux administrators, VMware admins, DBAs

Pain points addressed

Migrating NetApp-backed shared storage workloads to Google Cloud with minimal application changes
Need for snapshots/clones/replication for DR and dev/test workflows
Need for SMB and NFS support within the same environment

Qualification criteria (good fit)

Requirement for ONTAP-like snapshot/clone/replication semantics
Ability to operationalize provisioned-capacity economics and right-size pools
Network/VPC design that aligns with the PSA model and producer/consumer VPC constraints

05The pitch

What the product does (core value proposition in objective terms)

- Google Cloud NetApp Volumes is a fully managed file (and some block) storage service on Google Cloud, implemented using NetApp ONTAP data management capabilities. It is intended to support enterprise workloads without application refactoring (e.g., lift-and-shift NAS workloads, VMware datastores, SAP shared files, Windows/Linux file services). - The service exposes storage using standard protocols (documented multiprotocol access including NFS, SMB, and iSCSI) and is delivered via Private Service Access networking with a VPC peering–style model.

Target market and market positioning

- Target market skews toward mid-market to enterprise organizations with: - Existing NetApp ONTAP operational familiarity - Performance-sensitive shared file workloads (SAP, VDI, VMware, databases needing low-latency shared storage) - Hybrid/multi-cloud data management requirements (replication and snapshot/clone workflows) - Positioning vs Google Cloud Filestore - Filestore is positioned as a simpler managed NFS file service (Google-native) while NetApp Volumes is positioned as an enterprise-focused storage option with ONTAP-style data management and multiprotocol support.
