IBM Application Gateway (often abbreviated IAG) is a containerized web reverse proxy designed to place modern authentication in front of legacy web applications without changing application code. It integrates with identity providers (IdPs) using OpenID Connect (OIDC) and then propagates identity to protected applications using downstream methods such as HTTP headers, JSON Web Tokens (JWT), and, in some architectures, Kerberos-based SSO patterns.
IBM presents the product as a method to extend advanced authentication (for example, passkeys) and provide consistent sign-in flows across modern and legacy applications. The product includes Kubernetes integrations and is intended to operate with a limited set of runtime dependencies in many deployment patterns.
Vendor-stated claims that require validation include rapid configuration for basic scenarios, simplified integration mechanisms, and limited external dependencies. These claims are plausible for simple deployments, but production deployments commonly require DNS and TLS configuration, OIDC app registrations, header/JWT mapping, and change management across application teams. IBM’s public product page does not provide methodology or benchmark documentation supporting claims of very short time-to-deploy for typical enterprise scenarios.
