01Common complaints

Organizations that do not operate IBM Z or IBM Power
- The compiler family is optimized and licensed around IBM platforms; on commodity platforms GCC/Clang/MSVC are more natural choices.
When the primary objective is minimizing tooling cost
- Open-source compilers (GCC/Clang) eliminate licensing fees and procurement overhead.
When fastest compile times are the primary requirement
- Some community reports indicate compile-time regressions for Open XL versus classic XL in certain scenarios.
When maximal ecosystem compatibility with open-source build tooling is required
- Although Open XL aims for compatibility via Clang/LLVM, real-world ports can still involve platform-specific friction (headers, archiver/linker behavior, binary format differences).
When avoidance of vendor-specific lock-in is a strict requirement
- Using IBM’s proprietary compilers can increase dependence on IBM-specific toolchains and support channels.

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

Organizations primarily on non-IBM platforms (e.g., x86 Windows/Linux) without IBM Z/Power targets
Teams that require a single, identical toolchain across heterogeneous platforms with minimal platform-specific behavior
Organizations with limited budgets that prefer open-source toolchains and community support

1) Standards/library feature coverage (z/OS Open XL example)

IBM documents that Open XL C/C++ 1.1 for z/OS supports up to C17/C18 and C++17 features with known exceptions (e.g., thread-local storage limitations in certain modes; filesystem TS limitations in libc++ on z/OS).

2) Performance variability and regressions

Community reports indicate compile-time regressions and other performance variability when comparing Open XL to classic XL in specific AIX scenarios.

3) Toolchain integration gaps and portability shims

Independent porting reports describe missing headers and tool incompatibilities (e.g., archiver behavior) requiring manual adjustments.

4) Roadmap and migration experience variability

IBM’s move to LLVM/Clang is clear, but migration experiences differ by platform and version; buyers should seek detailed migration guidance for specific use cases.

02Why they buy

Platform specialization

The compilers are designed for IBM Z and IBM Power platforms and include optimizations and integrations specific to those environments.

Alignment with LLVM/Clang (Open XL)

IBM’s Open XL strategy is based on LLVM/Clang, which is intended to improve standards support and porting compatibility with open-source toolchains.

Performance potential in specific contexts

Independent case studies and vendor benchmarks indicate scenarios where Open XL or XL compilers can produce better runtime performance compared with other toolchains on IBM platforms; however, results are workload- and environment-specific.

Areas where competitors offer advantages

Cost, broad community support, and cross-platform tooling are strengths of GCC/Clang upstream offerings.

Review platforms (G2)

G2 lists a product page for IBM XL C/C++ for AIX that includes user reviews.

Example user comment (negative-oriented excerpt):

A reviewer notes: "New commands, big command structure and sometimes it is very hard to rectify." (G2)

Limitations:

This example pertains to one platform-specific SKU (AIX) and may not generalize to z/OS or Linux on Power.
Full sentiment distribution (pros/cons themes) requires deeper access to the review platform.

Community / social sentiment (Reddit)

Mainframe and IBM i community threads indicate varying practices and perceptions:

A thread in r/mainframe discusses whether companies license and install IBM C/C++ compilers; several commenters note assembler remains common for certain system components, which reduces compiler usage in some organizations.
In r/IBMi, users discuss costs and which compilers are provided with systems versus those that require separate purchase.
Some posts report portability or diagnostic friction when code that runs elsewhere fails to compile with IBM’s xlC in specific situations.

These community posts are anecdotal and operationally focused rather than systematic evaluations.

Case study A: IBM internal performance claims for Open XL C/C++ for z/OS

Critical evaluation:

Vendor‑published lab measurements typically reflect specific benchmark sets and hardware configurations; methodology and benchmark composition are not fully transparent in the excerpts.
Results are hardware‑ and workload‑specific and may not generalize to other environments.

IBM published internal lab results for Open XL C/C++ 2.2 for z/OS reporting average CPU time reductions versus z/OS XL C/C++ on specific z Systems hardware for a set of compute‑intensive benchmarks (reported moderate average CPU time reductions). Critical evaluation: - Vendor‑published lab measurements typically reflect specific benchmark sets and hardware configurations; methodology and benchmark composition are not fully transparent in the excerpts. - Results are hardware‑ and workload‑specific and may not generalize to other environments.

Case study B: MariaDB port to AIX with Open XL (independent)

An independent engineering writeup reports:

A specific Open XL release was materially faster than a recent GCC release for a MariaDB benchmark in the author’s environment (reported substantially faster per query).
The port required multiple build and compatibility workarounds.

Critical evaluation:

The writeup is independent, which increases its value for operational insights; however it is a single‑environment report and may reflect GCC limitations on AIX more than a universal advantage for Open XL.

Case study C: Compile-time regression complaint (community)

A community thread reports weaker compilation performance for Open XL versus classic XL on AIX.

Critical evaluation:

Compile‑time behavior is distinct from runtime performance; the report highlights tradeoffs that can occur during modernization to LLVM.
