IBM COBOL Upgrade Advisor for z/OS (often abbreviated CUAZ) is an IBM Z software product designed to reduce the effort and risk associated with upgrading large COBOL estates to IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS 6.x. The product supports the planning/scoping and readiness phases of compiler upgrades by inventorying COBOL assets (compiler versions, compile options, metadata), identifying prerequisite tasks, and recommending compiler option changes—presented in a Visual Studio Code-based interface.
IBM describes CUAZ as a tool to assist with modernization-related upgrades (to supported compiler levels and to enable use of COBOL 6 features and hardware capabilities) rather than a full application modernization or language-conversion suite (for example, it does not perform COBOL-to-Java conversion). IBM announced CUAZ 1.1 with general availability planned for 2025.
Key advertised capabilities (high-level):
- Inventory insights via static and dynamic scans (compiler versions, compile dates, options, metadata) and a visual summary.
- Export inventory results to CSV for sharing/reporting.
- Upgrade readiness assessment highlighting major prerequisite tasks (for example, runtime updates, source conversion).
- Compiler option recommendations and an IBM-recommended “two-compile, two-test” process to manage behavior changes in COBOL 6.
