- **AWS ECR / Azure ACR / Google Artifact Registry** generally have advantages when:
- the organization is already committed to that cloud provider,
- native authentication, networking, and cluster integration are priorities,
- extensive documentation, community troubleshooting, and third-party tool integration are important.
- **JFrog Artifactory (or similar universal artifact platforms)** is often preferable when:
- a single system is required for more than container images (Maven, npm, PyPI, Helm, etc.),
- advanced enterprise artifact governance across many formats is needed,
- a multi-cloud consistent policy and replication solution is desired.
- **Open source Harbor** is often chosen when:
- full control is required (for example, air-gapped environments and custom policy engines),
- vendor lock-in avoidance is a priority,
- sufficient operational staff exists to manage the platform.
