IBM Data Gate is a family of products designed to synchronize (replicate) IBM Z transactional data to cloud or modern analytics targets so analytics, AI, and other read-heavy workloads run against a synchronized copy rather than directly against operational mainframe systems. IBM describes the approach as intended to reduce mainframe workload impact while providing near-real-time access to synchronized data for modern architectures.
IBM’s product page describes two primary solutions under the IBM Data Gate umbrella:
- IBM Data Gate for watsonx: synchronizes data originating in Db2 for z/OS, IMS, and VSAM and integrates with IBM watsonx.data (Iceberg/lakehouse-oriented).
- IBM Data Gate + IBM Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D): synchronizes Db2 for z/OS data to Db2 targets optimized within IBM Cloud Pak for Data.
(IBM’s naming can be confusing in practice; external slide decks also distinguish “Db2 for z/OS Data Gate,” “Data Gate on Cloud,” and a “Cloud Pak for Data base service,” which indicates that the term Data Gate is used as an umbrella brand for multiple delivery models.)
