IBM Cloud Databases for PostgreSQL is IBM’s managed PostgreSQL (DBaaS) offering on IBM Cloud. The service provides a managed PostgreSQL endpoint where IBM operates the underlying infrastructure and common database operations (provisioning, patching, backups, high availability, monitoring, scaling) and customers consume a managed database service.
IBM markets the product as suitable for enterprise use and documents the following capabilities:
- High-availability architecture with a published uptime SLA and managed failover with replication.
- Encryption at rest and in transit, with optional customer-managed keys via IBM Key Protect.
- Operational DBaaS features: point-in-time recovery (PITR) backups, read replicas, monitoring/logging, autoscaling and independent disk/RAM scaling.
Important scope note: IBM also offers EDB Postgres Enterprise and Standard with IBM (a separately branded enterprise PostgreSQL offering tied to EDB/Postgres Advanced Server and Cloud Pak for Data). This report focuses on IBM Cloud Databases for PostgreSQL (the DBaaS product), while referencing EDB-with-IBM when relevant as an alternative within IBM’s portfolio.
