Consider alternatives when:
- The organization is not committed to IBM Cloud and seeks maximum portability of skills and community support; alternatives include EKS/AKS/GKE.
- The organization requires a highly opinionated platform with built-in developer workflows and policy controls; consider Red Hat OpenShift (including OpenShift on IBM Cloud).
- The buyer is highly cost-sensitive and requires simple, SMB-oriented pricing; providers such as DigitalOcean Kubernetes may present simpler small-cluster pricing models.
- Transparent, self-serve pricing calculators for fast prototyping and predictable per-cluster costs are a procurement requirement; IBM’s public pricing information can be less direct depending on the market and procurement path.
- Support risk is unacceptable without contractual SLAs or named support contacts; in such cases, insist on contractual SLAs, named contacts, or consider vendors with consistently strong enterprise support track records.
