No credible public market-share numbers specific to Python on z/OS were found. Adoption indicators can be inferred from IBM release cadence, PTFs, and community activity, but uptake will vary across organizations based on modernization priorities and operational readiness.
| Starting Price | Vendor describes variable licensing and support terms; ordering details and potential fees depend on installation method and procurement context. | Pricing is typically quote-based; Rocket offers downloadable tools and commercial support options. | Commercial terms vary; platform-related infrastructure costs apply. |
| Primary fit | A supported Python runtime distributed for installation on z/OS, intended for automation and integration tasks that access mainframe resources. | A broader integrated distribution and packaging solution for multiple open-source tools on z/OS, with tooling for packaging and vulnerability management. | Provides a Linux-native Python environment on IBM Z hardware, typically with broader wheel availability and standard Linux tooling. |
| Key strengths | Native z/OS integration points (SMP/E, USS, encoding interoperability) and alignment with IBM z/OS operational practices. | Emphasizes integrated packaging channels, CVE management, and commercial support for a bundle of OSS tools. | Broader compatibility with standard Python ecosystem packages and familiar Linux-based DevOps workflows. |
| Key weaknesses | Third-party package compatibility and platform-specific build requirements can require additional engineering effort; requires z/OS operational expertise. | May introduce reliance on a third-party distribution and overlap with IBM tooling. | Not a z/OS-native approach; may require cross-platform integration and does not keep execution on z/OS. |

Compared to Rocket Open AppDev for Z: Rocket emphasizes an integrated distribution and operational tooling for multiple open-source components, while IBM’s SDK focuses on a supported Python runtime aligned to IBM ordering and maintenance practices. Organizations should evaluate whether they prefer a single-vendor supported Python runtime on z/OS or a broader integrated third-party distribution.
Compared to Python on Linux on Z: running Python on Linux provides access to a wider set of prebuilt packages and may simplify some DevOps workflows, but it relocates execution away from z/OS-native constructs and datasets.
