IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js is an IBM-supported (optional) distribution of the Node.js runtime designed to run server-side JavaScript applications natively on IBM z/OS. Its practical value for customers includes:
- Co-locating APIs and microservices with mainframe data to reduce latency and data movement.
- Using mainstream Node.js and npm skills and packages while integrating with z/OS services.
- Operating Node.js under traditional z/OS software management patterns (SMP/E) or via pax installs and, more recently, as an image for the z/OS Container Platform.
IBM offers the SDK without a license charge and positions it as a tool to support modernization efforts for IBM Z customers that prefer extending or wrapping existing systems rather than rewriting them. IBM describes the product using the phrase "secure, scalable, module-driven".
Important scope note: This product is a runtime distribution with IBM packaging, enablement, and z/OS-specific integration guidance. Many outcomes depend on adjacent IBM products (for example, z/OS Connect EE, CICS TS, Db2, RACF) and on the customer’s z/OS operational maturity.
