Consider alternatives when:
1) The organization does not require distributed tracing from z/OS
- If the primary need is capacity/performance analytics and reporting on z/OS, a performance-analysis-first product (e.g., IntelliMagic-style tooling) may provide faster value.
2) The enterprise observability strategy is not OpenTelemetry-driven
- If the organization is locked into a proprietary agent pipeline and has no appetite for OTLP/collector operations, adopting OTel can add operational overhead.
3) The organization cannot govern telemetry volume and cost
- Without governance for what is traced or retained, adding mainframe telemetry can accelerate data growth and increase spend (backend ingestion, storage, indexing).
4) The procurement process requires abundant peer reviews and independent benchmarks
- This product has limited direct review visibility on mainstream review sites, so a solution with broader public validation may be preferred or a longer PoC will be necessary.
5) Procurement requires clear self-serve pricing
- If publicly posted SKUs/pricing are required, IBM Z Observability Connect may be challenging to assess based on available sources.
