IBM z/VM is IBM’s mainframe hypervisor/virtualization operating system for IBM Z and LinuxONE. It is designed to run and manage large numbers of virtual machines ("guests")—commonly Linux guests, but also other IBM mainframe OS guests—on a single physical system with strong isolation, resource sharing/overcommit capabilities, and availability characteristics common to mainframe platforms. IBM describes z/VM as a foundation for large-scale Linux consolidation and hybrid-cloud-aligned infrastructure on IBM Z.
Key IBM-stated capabilities include running a large number of guest servers on one IBM Z or LinuxONE server, and supporting Linux, z/OS, z/TPF guests, plus Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z/LinuxONE environments.
