Iobeam

Name: Iobeam
Brand: Iobeam

Iobeam is a legacy domain now representing Tiger Data's TimescaleDB and Tiger Cloud, a PostgreSQL-compatible time-series database extension and managed cloud service that provides hypertables, continuous aggregates, compression and tiering to store and analyze high-ingest time-series/event data via SQL.

01Common complaints

- If the purchaser specifically intends to acquire the historical “iobeam” IoT analytics product: the domain now redirects to Tiger Data; confirm which product is intended prior to procurement. - When the workload is primarily OLAP analytics over very wide, columnar datasets and Postgres semantics are not required: consider ClickHouse. - When a telemetry-native TSDB model with specific ingestion/retention/query economics is required and the organization is aligned to that ecosystem: consider InfluxDB. - When the organization cannot tolerate tuning and operational complexity and does not want a managed offering: a simpler managed database or purpose-built service may be preferable. - When running on constrained hardware (edge/home-lab) and resource overhead is unacceptable: community reports indicate Postgres/Timescale can be heavier than some alternatives. - **iobeam brand ambiguity:** iobeam.com redirects to Tiger Data, making “Iobeam” difficult to evaluate as a distinct product. - **Continuous aggregate constraints:** documentation notes query limitations and version-specific behavior (e.g., real-time aggregates default changed in v2.13). - **Compression + refresh interactions:** documentation warns about version limitations prior to 2.11.0 regarding refreshing compressed regions. - **Licensing/feature packaging confusion** is raised in community threads (particularly around hosted DBaaS contexts).

Deal disqualifiers

Very small deployments where overhead dominates (e.g., home-lab)
Teams unwilling to manage Postgres operational complexity (if self-hosting)
Requirements for a pure OLAP engine (may favor ClickHouse)

02Why they buy

Validated more by product architecture and community discussion than by vendor messaging: - **PostgreSQL compatibility** (ecosystem, tooling, ORMs, SQL) combined with time-series primitives. - **Continuous aggregates**: incremental refresh patterns intended to reduce repeated heavy scans. - **Compression policies**: automate time-based compression for older chunks. Balanced view: - Competitors may outperform on specialized dimensions (e.g., ClickHouse on OLAP speed; InfluxDB on TSDB-first workflows).

Why customers chose it (common themes across sources)

PostgreSQL compatibility / SQL (avoid adopting a new query language)
Time-series performance primitives (hypertables, compression, continuous aggregates)
Ability to combine relational and time-series data in a single database

03Field reports

Review platform coverage note (important)

There do not appear to be mainstream review-platform listings specifically for “iobeam” as a current standalone product.
Therefore, review evidence below focuses on Tiger Data / TimescaleDB as the effective product behind the domain today.

G2 (Tiger Data / TimescaleDB vendor profile)

Tiger Data (creators of TimescaleDB) is very highly rated on G2.
Example positive excerpts (paraphrased):
- Reviewers highlight fast setup, reliable ingestion speeds, PostgreSQL compatibility, and helpful documentation/community.

Bias caveat: G2 shows a number of reviews that are invite-based or incentivized, which can skew sentiment upward compared with purely organic review volumes.

Community/Social — mixed, including criticism

Representative threads show both positive and negative feedback: - **Licensing / packaging / DBaaS friction:** Threads discuss feature limitations in some hosted contexts and licensing changes affecting DBaaS providers. - **Operational pain / performance overhead (some use cases):** Community posts describe Postgres/TimescaleDB consuming substantial CPU in particular home-lab setups compared with lighter-weight databases. - **Migration complexity:** Reports of challenges enabling TimescaleDB on large existing installations and of long migration/initialization times at very large DB sizes. - **Positive value at scale:** Posts from the database community describe moving from other relational systems to TimescaleDB for very large datasets and observing query-time improvements.

Why some customers leave / avoid (common themes)

Operational overhead / resource usage (especially on small hardware or poorly tuned setups)
Licensing/feature packaging confusion depending on deployment model
Migration complexity for large existing datasets

Vendor-published customer examples (Tiger Data site)

Tiger Data’s homepage highlights recognizable brands and quotes, including examples described as: - A major CDN using TimescaleDB to balance operational simplicity with analytical performance. - A prediction-market platform noting ease of setup and time-series processing. - A machine-learning platform using Tiger Cloud for observability of inference endpoints. - A large automotive racing team using the service for real-time operational data and analytics. **Critical evaluation:** - These are vendor-selected examples; the available material does not provide: - baseline metrics (before/after) - methodology for ROI claims - cost trade-offs - implementation pitfalls - Treat these examples as directional evidence of adoption rather than quantified ROI proof.

04Best fit

Company sizes

SMB to enterprise, particularly teams with significant time-series volume.
Practical fit often begins when workloads involve sustained, high-volume ingest and ongoing query/aggregation needs.

Industries / verticals

Observability/DevOps platforms
Fintech trading/market data
IoT device telemetry
Industrial monitoring
AI/ML platform observability

Roles and personas

Decision makers: Head of Platform, VP Engineering, Data Engineering lead
End users: backend engineers, SREs, data engineers, analytics engineers

Qualification criteria

Existing PostgreSQL usage that should be extended for time-series workloads
Requirement for SQL joins between time-series and relational tables
Organizational willingness to invest in tuning/architecture or preference for the managed Tiger Cloud offering

05The pitch

What the product does (core value proposition in objective terms)

- The iobeam brand/domain no longer appears to market an iobeam product directly. Visiting the iobeam domain redirects to Tiger Data, the company behind TimescaleDB and Tiger Cloud (a managed Postgres service optimized for time-series and analytics). This suggests the iobeam brand/domain is now primarily a legacy domain associated with the Timescale/Tiger Data business. - Practically, an evaluation labeled “Iobeam” today is likely an evaluation of: - **TimescaleDB** (open-source PostgreSQL extension for time-series) - **Tiger Cloud** (managed cloud service from Tiger Data / Timescale)

Target market and market positioning

Primary users: developers, data engineers, platform teams, and SRE/observability teams needing high-ingest time-series/event data plus SQL analytics.
Positioning: Postgres for time-series, analytics, and AI/agents — using PostgreSQL compatibility while adding time-series primitives (hypertables, continuous aggregates, compression, tiering) and a managed cloud offering.
