Because Narrative Science is effectively a legacy offering, the following conditions indicate it is not an appropriate choice:
1) If a new deployment is required today
- Organizations should not plan a new implementation around Narrative Science standalone tooling; it is not marketed as an independent offering after the acquisition.
2) If workflows depend on Tableau Data Stories
- Tableau documented that Data Stories was retired in January 2025, so continued dependence on that specific feature is risky or infeasible depending on the Tableau environment.
3) If open-ended LLM-style narrative flexibility is required
- Tableau documented that Data Stories used rules-based templated NLG rather than generative LLMs; if requirements include open-ended narrative Q&A or conversational exploration, alternative architectures should be considered and accuracy/governance validated.
4) If there is no capacity for configuration and governance
- Narrative systems typically require substantial definition of significance thresholds, metric semantics, and language customization to be trusted and useful.
