01Common complaints

- Non-technical teams without developer support: Schema-as-code and customization can be a blocker; reviews frequently note a learning curve and coding requirements. - Simple brochure sites: The platform may be excessive for simple use cases and low-change content. - Large editor teams with many occasional users: Seat-based pricing may be less attractive compared with alternatives that use different licensing models. - Performance-sensitive editorial experiences at very large dataset sizes: Community reports indicate the Studio can experience responsiveness issues in some large-content scenarios; performance engineering and careful schema/Studio design may be required. Disqualifiers (poor fit)

No in-house developer capacity.
Need for a highly opinionated, ready-to-go CMS with minimal configuration.
Very simple site with infrequent updates where a lightweight CMS or static site approach would be more cost-effective.

Current limitations / pain points cited by users

- Steep learning curve (schemas-as-code, GROQ, Studio customization). - Operational friction for certain admin tasks (e.g., bulk deletes that may require scripts). - Potential Studio performance degradation in large datasets or rich text-heavy scenarios. - Type generation workflow friction reported in community threads. Roadmap / upcoming features

This research did not capture a definitive, dated public roadmap from Sanity. Prospective procurement should request a product roadmap and SLA commitments during vendor evaluation.

03Field reports

Review-platform sentiment (G2)

Sanity is very highly rated on G2. Buyers should review individual negative comments to understand specific trade-offs such as learning curve and required developer involvement.

Direct quotes — positive (G2)

1) "The Easiest CMS I've Used" - Like: "Easiest CMS I have worked in — the team at Sanity is knowledgeable and incredibly helpful." - Dislike: "the search functionality where the images are stored is not great" 2) "Flexible and Developer-Friendly Headless CMS" - Like: "The Sanity Studio is customizable, the real-time collaboration feels like Google Docs for content, and the GROQ query language makes pulling content easy" - Dislike: "The learning curve can be a bit steep at first…" 3) "Seamless integration with our Next.js app" - Like: "fast, developer-friendly, and incredibly customizable" - Dislike: "Starting from a blank slate means there’s a fair amount of initial setup…"

Direct quotes — negative / critical (community)

Performance/editor experience concern:

"...editing articles in it has been painfully slow… sluggish — tons of typing delays, slow field updates, occasional freezes, and other bugs."

Tooling/type generation pain:

"sanity types sucks so bad… i have to rerun the types every time i make a change in my schema…"

Other review sources

Trustpilot and other platforms show limited review volume but echo themes found elsewhere: flexible but with a learning curve for some users.

Recurring themes cited by reviewers

Schema-as-code and control over content modeling.
Real-time collaboration.
Customizable editor experience (Studio).
API delivery and GROQ querying.

Reasons cited for leaving or hesitation

The platform may be excessive for simple websites.
Learning curve, particularly for non-developers.
Initial setup effort and ongoing developer reliance.
Performance issues reported anecdotally for large datasets and rich text in Studio.

Vendor-cited customer logos and outcomes

Press coverage and vendor materials reference adoption across a range of recognizable customers and industries.

Critical evaluation:

These references are vendor- or press-reported and may not disclose scope (pilot vs full deployment), time-to-value, or quantified ROI.

Practical case-like evidence from reviews

Example from a reviewer:

A small business described using Sanity as their content backend, praising structure and customizability of the Studio while noting that bulk operations required custom scripting.

Critical evaluation:

This provides operational detail from a single reviewer and is not independently verified.

04Best fit

Company sizes (practical ranges)

Most suitable: Small to mid-sized organizations with at least a small development team supporting content operations.
Enterprise fit: Large organizations that require formal compliance artifacts, SSO, SLAs, and custom support often aligned with Enterprise engagements.

Evidence basis: plan packaging (Free vs Growth vs Enterprise) and review themes about developer involvement.

Industries / verticals

Based on press and public references:

Digital media and publishing
Consumer brands and retail
SaaS and technology companies

Roles and personas

Decision makers: Head of Engineering, CTO, VP Digital, Head of Web Platform, Content Operations Lead.
Power users: Frontend engineers, platform engineers, solutions architects.
End users: Content editors, marketers, product marketing, technical writers.

Qualification criteria (good fit)

Requirements include structured content reused across multiple surfaces.
Organization can invest in schema design and custom editorial UX development.
Preference for real-time collaboration and developer control over editorial experiences.

05The pitch

What the product does (objective value proposition)

Sanity is a developer-centric, headless/composable content platform that stores structured content in a hosted backend ("Content Lake") and delivers it via APIs to any front end (web, mobile, kiosks, etc.). A distinguishing feature is a customizable editing environment (Sanity Studio) built with JavaScript/React where content models (schemas) are defined as code rather than configured purely via a UI. The product provides real-time collaboration features (Google Docs-style presence) and supports flexible querying via GROQ.

Target market and positioning

- Primary buyers/users: Developer-led teams building content-driven applications (marketing sites, product docs, ecommerce content, multi-channel experiences) who require control over content modeling and editing workflows. - Positioning: Marketed as a "Content Operating System" intended to provide structured content management, collaboration, and extensibility beyond a traditional CMS. - Most suitable use cases: Complex content models, multi-team workflows, and teams prepared to invest in schema design and Studio customization.
