Organizations should consider alternatives or different approaches when:
1. The primary fraud problem is behavioral (serial returners, wardrobing, receipt fraud) in categories without serial numbers — behavior/identity analytics vendors may outperform a product-provenance model.
2. Serial capture is operationally unrealistic: high associate turnover, lack of scanners, poor label quality, or frequent missing serials.
3. The procurement process requires public documentation of security attestations (SOC 2/ISO) and those attestation documents are expected to be publicly posted; IPC’s product-specific certifications are not publicly documented.
4. Budget constraints favor lighter-weight policy or process controls that can be implemented without enterprise tooling (though this may carry operational and customer-service tradeoffs).
