Strapi is positioned as an open-source, developer-oriented CMS with customization capabilities (routes, plugins, policies). Directus emphasizes rapid backend provisioning and a data-first approach with distinct licensing for self-hosted scenarios. Contentful is positioned as a managed enterprise SaaS that reduces customer ops responsibilities but can incur higher costs at scale. Community signals indicate some teams evaluate Directus or other alternatives when they encounter difficult upgrade or customization scenarios with Strapi.
