1. Early-stage prototypes where signoff accuracy is unnecessary
- For conceptual exploration or educational purposes, ngspice, LTspice, or Xyce may be more appropriate.
2. If an organization is fully standardized on Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre and the switching cost is high
- HSPICE may be used for signoff, but introducing a new signoff simulator can create workflow friction unless there is a clear business justification.
3. If maximum capacity is the primary requirement rather than maximum accuracy
- For very large extracted designs, a FastSPICE approach (e.g., PrimeSim XA/Pro or competitor capacity engines) may be more practical for regression workloads.
4. If licensing complexity and cost are strict constraints
- Commercial signoff tools have enterprise pricing profiles. If a sustainable license and compute budget cannot be secured, workflow disruption is possible.
5. If required analyses are not supported in the chosen integration layer
- When running through an external front-end (e.g., ADE integration), validate feature parity; community reports note at least one case where a specific analysis (e.g., PSS) was not available via a given integration.
