Situations where Laker may be appropriate
- When an organization already operates substantial Synopsys custom design infrastructure and requires a known, stable layout environment.
- When a foundry iPDK/reference flow explicitly supports Laker for the target node and the organization has internal expertise or prior investment in Synopsys tooling.
Where competing products may be preferred
- Ecosystem gravity: Cadence Virtuoso is often the default for hiring and training in many AMS organizations, which can make it the more practical choice where talent availability is a priority.
- Enablement materials: some community feedback suggests that training and onboarding materials for alternative ecosystems may be easier to access or more abundant.
Internal product dynamics
- Within Synopsys’ portfolio, newer products such as Custom Compiler are presented publicly as an alternative path. For new programs, organizations should evaluate whether to adopt a newer Synopsys environment or continue with Laker based on technical fit, migration cost, and long-term vendor support priorities.
