01Common complaints

- **If a dedicated OKR suite is required:** For deep OKR governance, strategy maps, advanced analytics, and formal review cycles, a dedicated OKR product (for example, WorkBoard or Perdoo) may be more suitable. - **If the organization will not commit to governance and training:** Weak project hygiene or lack of adoption discipline can lead to increased administrative overhead and unreliable reporting. - **If goal-level automations are central to the operating model:** Community posts indicate gaps or limitations in goal-level automation; validate current capabilities in a pilot before committing. - **If OKRs must be tightly integrated with performance management:** If OKRs must integrate directly with 1:1s, reviews, engagement surveys, and HRIS workflows, consider an HR/performance suite such as Lattice. - **If the majority of users are read-only viewers only:** Seat-based licensing can be cost-inefficient compared with tools that offer lower-cost viewer licenses.

Deal disqualifiers (poor fit)

Requirement for advanced OKR governance (approvals, scoring frameworks, strategy maps) without adding other tools
Need for heavy automation rules that operate directly on Goals objects (if limitations persist)
Budget constraints that prevent scaling seat-based licensing for broad visibility

Limitations frequently cited by users

Automation limitations on Goals: Users report that rules or automation may not apply to Goals or were not supported at the time, requiring workarounds.
Usability constraints: Examples include long goal names not being visible in some views.
Permission/ownership expectations: Ownership and access may not cascade intuitively to sub-goals in some configurations.

API and extensibility notes

Asana documents Goals API access and events/webhooks for goals, which can be used for integrations and synchronizing external systems.

Roadmap / feature updates

Asana publishes release notes and "What’s New" posts. Buyers should confirm whether specific pain points (for example, goal-level automations) have been addressed in the most current product behavior.

Why some customers leave or consider leaving (churn reasons)

Community discussions and comparison threads suggest common reasons for leaving or evaluating alternatives include:

Cost at scale due to seat-based pricing and perceived feature gating.
Automation and reporting requirements not met for specific advanced workflows.
Preference for more customizable systems (for example, Notion), broader all-in-one feature sets (for example, ClickUp), or IT/governance-oriented ecosystems (for example, Jira).

Where the workflow struggles (from user feedback)

Duplicate updates between project status and goal status.
Structural complexity when mixing accountable teams, multiple owners, and cross-team views.

02Why they buy

Unique selling points supported by product design and user rationale

Goals are integrated with Asana work objects (projects, portfolios, tasks), which supports linkage between objectives and execution.
Automatic progress updates are available for some goal types when configured with linked work or integrations, reducing certain manual reporting tasks.
Goals provide an alignment layer across company, team, and individual levels within the Asana platform.

Where competitors have clear advantages

Dedicated OKR platforms generally provide deeper OKR governance, workflows, and analytics.
HR/performance suites provide stronger integration between goals and performance management processes.

Why customers chose Asana Goals over alternatives (inferred from reviews)

Reviewers and community commentary indicate two primary rationales:

Avoiding an OKR "island": keeping OKRs separate from day-to-day work can cause drift; embedding goals within the same tool used for execution reduces context switching.
Single-platform visibility: leadership can see progress without requiring teams to use a separate OKR product.

03Field reports

Note: Review platforms frequently combine commentary about Asana overall with specific feedback about Goals. The excerpts below focus on comments that reference goals/OKRs where available.

Gartner Peer Insights (review platform)

Gartner Peer Insights reviewers describe Asana Goals as relatively basic in comparison to dedicated OKR products, while covering core OKR elements such as setting time periods, metrics, and owners.

TrustRadius (review platform)

TrustRadius reviews commonly emphasize Asana’s value for cross-team visibility and tracking against goals. One reviewer described Asana as an effective way to view team progress against goals.

Reddit (community/social) — praise and frustrations

Reddit discussions show both adoption and dissatisfaction patterns. Common positive themes: - Linking Goals to portfolios and projects to provide context for objectives. Common negative themes: - Confusion about the relationship between Goals and Portfolios and how to structure goal hierarchies. - Manual overhead required to keep goal progress and project status aligned. - Requests for automation on Goals; community posts indicate that, at the time of those discussions, Asana did not support rules on Goals, producing workarounds. Representative community excerpts (selected for relevance): - "How many sub goals or projects do I have to make to update a stupid goal?" (community discussion) - "Unfortunately, right now Asana does not support rules on Goals :-(." (community discussion)

Hacker News (community)

Hacker News contains broader product discussions; for this research pass, the most relevant community material for Goals came from Reddit and Asana’s own forum.

Vendor-published claims and examples

Asana publishes product pages and guides describing how Goals can ladder up and automatically track progress based on connected work, and highlights feature updates such as goal templates and visibility controls. Critical evaluation: - Most quantified outcomes cited in vendor materials are not independently validated in the public sources used for this report. Where outcomes are presented, they are often in vendor marketing materials without full methodology. - For procurement diligence, request case evidence including: - Before/after metrics (for example, cycle time, on-time delivery) - Adoption metrics (for example, regular active-status metrics) - Audit sampling to verify goal progress accuracy

Mixed results / struggling projects

Community feedback on manual overhead and automation gaps indicates some teams struggle to maintain Goals hygiene, which can result in:

Stale goal status updates
Superficial or checkbox-style OKRs that do not reflect underlying performance
Reduced trust in dashboarded reporting among leadership

04Best fit

Company sizes

Primary fit: mid-market to enterprise organizations, especially where multiple departments require shared goal visibility.
Possible fit: smaller organizations and teams if the organization is already standardized on Asana and can justify paid tiers.

Industries / verticals

Common fits include organizations with high cross-functional coordination needs:

SaaS / technology
Marketing and creative operations
Professional services
Nonprofits (some discount programs are noted by users)

Roles and personas

Decision makers: COO, VP of Operations, PMO leaders, department heads, IT/admin owners of Asana
End users: Goal owners, program managers, team leads, individual contributors needing execution context

Qualification criteria (strong fit)

Organization already uses Asana broadly for execution work
Leadership seeks lightweight OKRs tied directly to project work
Willingness to invest in governance (naming conventions, ownership rules, and update cadence)

05The pitch

What the product does (core value proposition)

Asana Goals is a goal- and OKR-style tracking layer built into Asana that aims to connect strategy (company, team, and individual goals) to execution work (projects, portfolios, tasks). It supports setting goals, defining targets and timeframes, linking "supporting work" to goals, and tracking progress—optionally with automatic progress updates based on connected work or integrations (for example, Salesforce reporting). Asana describes Goals as a central repository for setting and tracking objectives alongside execution work, with the intent of improving alignment, visibility, and prioritization across the organization.

Target market and positioning

- **Primary buyer:** Mid-market and enterprise organizations that have standardized on Asana for collaborative work management and want integrated OKR/goal management within the same platform used for project execution. - **Typical users:** Executives and functional leaders (goal owners), PMOs/operations (cadence & reporting), and individual contributors (visibility and status updates). - **Positioning vs dedicated OKR tools:** Goals is more tightly integrated with day-to-day work execution in Asana and typically offers fewer built-in capabilities for OKR governance, advanced strategy mapping, or compensation/performance linkage than specialized OKR suites.
