01Common complaints

Organizations seeking to establish new VMware deployments on IBM Cloud in 2026: IBM requires that new deployments of VMware Solutions are not available to new customers after October 31, 2025.
Organizations that require unconditional ability to expand to new regions or resource pools without contract-level restrictions: third-party reporting indicates possible constraints for some customers; confirm contract terms.
Organizations with strict cost limits sensitive to variable networking/egress charges: IBM documentation and user commentary indicate additional charges (edge/egress/add-ons) that can affect total cost.
Organizations planning a long-term exit from VMware: Consider alternatives such as Nutanix AHV or OpenShift Virtualization / KubeVirt instead of re-hosting VMware workloads in another VMware-in-cloud environment.
Organizations with low tolerance for support or billing friction: community anecdotes referencing refund disputes and support access complaints suggest clarifying support entitlements and SLA terms is prudent.

Commercial / lifecycle limitations

End of availability for new customers: IBM’s ordering/configuration information indicates that new VMware Solutions deployments are not available for new customers after October 31, 2025.

Operational limitations (from reviews)

Networking and integration limitations have been reported by some reviewers.
Management complexity in environments where IBM manages parts of the stack and customers manage other layers can create operational ambiguity.

Security issue tracking reality

IBM publishes security bulletins that include VMware-related vulnerabilities for IBM products embedding VMware components. VMware vulnerabilities affect all deployment models; organizations should clarify patching and maintenance responsibilities in contracts and operational runbooks.

Use cases where it struggles

Cloud-native modernization: Kubernetes-first microservices or managed PaaS adoption are better served by cloud-native platforms rather than re-hosting on VMware-in-cloud as a long-term strategy.
Rapid greenfield VMware adoption on IBM Cloud in 2026: not feasible for new customers due to the availability restriction.

02Why they buy

Unique selling points supported by evidence (with caveats)

Compliance program breadth: IBM Cloud lists a set of compliance programs (SOC 1/2/3, ISO 27001/27017/27018, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and others). Organizations should verify SKU and region coverage.
Security posture options: Practitioner reviews note that dedicated bare-metal hardware and encryption options are perceived as beneficial for security-sensitive environments.

Claims that require skepticism / verification

Vendor-supplied ROI claims (for example, single-figure or multi-year ROI values reported in marketing materials or commissioned TEI studies) should be validated in the organization’s own context and assumptions.

Areas where competitors may have advantages

Ecosystem gravity and service adjacency: major hyperscalers generally offer tighter integration with their broader cloud services.
Commercial continuity for net-new VMware-in-cloud deployments: IBM’s commercial restriction for new customers is a disadvantage relative to hyperscalers that continue to accept new VMware deployments.

03Field reports

This section draws from G2, TrustRadius, and community discussions (for example, Reddit). Platform summaries and individual reviews were used where accessible.

TrustRadius (review platform)

Overall score shown: a moderately high rating on TrustRadius with a moderate review footprint (TrustRadius listing).
Community insights summarize common pros such as administration efficiency, cost-savings reported, and perceived flexibility and scalability; individual reviews provide additional nuance.

Representative reviewer comments include observations about pricing levels and documentation coverage, indicating some purchasers experienced higher-than-expected costs and engaged in self-directed learning or vendor support calls to complete deployments.

G2 (review platform)

G2 shows a generally positive rating with a small review footprint for IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions (as accessible on the site).

Representative reviewer sentiment (paraphrased):

Positive: Some reviewers cited security-related benefits associated with dedicated bare-metal hardware, multiple storage options, and high availability.
Critical: Other reviewers described management complexity, integration constraints related to networking, a steep learning curve, and occasional hardware compatibility issues. Some criticisms may reflect VMware product characteristics rather than IBM’s cloud integration layer.

Community / social (Reddit)

Community discussions are often candid and anecdotal; they can skew toward problem cases and are not representative samples.

Recurring themes relevant to IBM-hosted VMware decisions include:

Broadcom-era VMware licensing changes and their impact on smaller customers.
License renewal cost increases and bundling-related concerns.
IBM Cloud–specific anecdotal complaints in community threads about perceived support access limits and individual billing disputes. These items are anecdotal and should be validated through formal channels.

Synthesis: Why customers choose the offering

Common reasons implied by review excerpts and IBM positioning:

Preserve VMware operational model and vCenter familiarity.
Support for regulated workloads where compliance artifacts and enterprise controls are required.
Avoid refactoring by using migration tools (for example, HCX) and VMware Cloud Foundation constructs.

Synthesis: Why some customers leave or churn drivers

Common drivers include:

Licensing cost increases and forced bundles (industry-wide factor).
Perceptions of support decline or support friction reported in community sources.
Strategic shifts toward Kubernetes/OpenShift or other virtualization alternatives.

Vendor/commissioned analysis: Forrester TEI

Forrester published The Total Economic Impact™ of IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions, describing flexible consumption and a multi-year cost table (including risk-adjusted costs). Critical evaluation:

Forrester TEI studies are typically commissioned and based on a small number of interviews; they can be directionally useful but should not be treated as large-sample independent validation.
Organizations should review the full study PDF and examine interviewee profiles, baseline assumptions (for example, on-prem depreciation, staffing, and licensing), and sensitivity to VMware licensing changes.

04Best fit

Given the 2025–2026 constraints, two practical ICPs emerge:

ICP A: Existing IBM Cloud VMware customers (most realistic in 2026)

Size: Mid-market to enterprise (typically larger organizations; multi-cluster VMware estates)
Industries: Financial services, healthcare, and other regulated sectors where documented controls matter
Personas: Infrastructure/virtualization leads, cloud platform teams, security/compliance officers
Primary objective: Continue operating and moderately expand VMware workloads already on IBM Cloud
Good fit when: An organization already operates active workloads on IBM Cloud VMware and requires operational continuity
Disqualifiers: Organizations seeking to start new VMware-on-IBM environments (commercially unavailable for new customers) or that require unrestricted region/resource-pool expansion without contractual constraints

ICP B: Buyers of IBM VMware-adjacent tooling

Product examples: IBM Turbonomic (optimization), IBM storage and resilience tools, IBM Consulting migration services
Objective: Optimize VMware performance and cost, or pursue gradual modernization without moving all workloads to a different hypervisor immediately

05The pitch

What the product does (objective core value proposition)

IBM’s VMware-related offering has historically focused on:

Lift-and-shift / hybrid operations: run VMware workloads on IBM Cloud while preserving VMware tooling and operational models.
Managed and self-managed options: varying levels of IBM management for the underlying VMware stack.
Security/compliance positioning: IBM markets the offering for regulated workloads and enterprise control frameworks.

Important market update (availability constraint): as of October 31, 2025, IBM Cloud indicates new VMware Solutions deployments are no longer available for new customers (existing customers can continue to use and expand active VMware workloads on IBM Cloud). This affects the product’s suitability for net-new buyers.

“IBM VMware” typically refers to IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions (VMware Cloud Foundation / vSphere-based environments delivered on IBM Cloud infrastructure) together with adjacent IBM tooling (for example, Turbonomic optimization, backup/resiliency integrations, and IBM Consulting services) that support VMware estates.
